Warner Bros Festive Selection

Just before Christmas, we received a lovely bundle of goodies all wrapped up in a Christmas stocking from Warner Bros. It contained chocolate (always a bonus), candy canes and three great DVD’s to watch. It’s been a rather hectic Christmas in the Brown household so I’ve only just got round to writing about them now :)

The first DVD was Polar Express, fabulous festive viewing for the family :) MasterB and MissB loved the whole train thing but they are still a little young to make it the entire way through the film but I have a feeling it is going to get brought out and played in the run up to Christmas every year from now on :)

“It’s Christmas Eve, and you’re about to roller-coaster up and down mountains, slip-slide over ice fields, tetter across mile-high bridges and be served hot chocolate by singing waiter more astonishing than any you can ever imagine. You’re on The Polar Express!

Tom Hanks stars in and Robert Zemeckis directs this instant holiday classive filmed in dazzling performance-capture animation that makes every home magical.”

I really love this film and I really hope MissB and MasterB grow to love it too! It’s one of those lovely films which you just HAVE to watch in the run up to Christmas. There is something so magical about it and it even has me wondering whether I should be listening out for the bells on Christmas Eve.

If you have kids then you MUST have this DVD in your collection!

Second up was The Dark Knight Rising

“It has been eight years since Batman vanished into the night, turning, in that instant, from hero to fugitive. Assuming the blame for the death of D.A. Harvey Dent, the Dark Knight sacrificed everything for what he and Commissioner Gordon both hoped was the greater good. For a time the lie worked, as criminal activity in Gotham City was crushed under the weight of the anti-crime Dent Act.

But everything will change with the arrival of a cunning cat burglar with a mysterious agenda. Far more dangerous, however, is the emergence of Bane, a masked terrorist whose ruthless plans for Gotham drive Bruce out of his self-imposed exile. But even if he dons the cape and cowl again, Batman may be no match for Bane.”

Action films are something I haven’t seen much of in the last couple of years. I think it’s because my TV now seems to be controlled by toddlers and I’m lucky if I can watch anything other than In The Night Garden and Mickey’s Club House ;) I don’t really know what I was expecting with this, it’s been a while since I last saw a Batman film and I was surprised at just how much I got into this one.

It’s action packed from the word go and I found myself really drawn into it. Of course a nice set of abs encased in black rubber always helps ;) The special effects are spectacular and I’d love to watch it in 3D, I bet it is amazing! If you love action films then this is definitely one to watch, it has a fast moving plot, great action and a good story line. It didn’t disappoint!

and finally, we spent New Years Eve watching the rather aptly named New Years Eve :) When you have two toddlers and nobody to babysit then New Years Eve is more about sitting by the fire, with a bottle of champagne watching films :)

“New Year’s Eve” celebrates love, hope, forgiveness, second chances and fresh starts, with intertwining stories told amidst the pulse and promise of New York City on the most dazzling night of the year.”

This film is pretty much everything you need for an enjoyable evening, although the story line does jump around a little which can get a little confusing when you are half way through a bottle of champagne ;) I admit I may have lost track of the plot a little at some points but it all came together in the end.

The connections between the characters as the plot progresses add an interesting element and it pretty much has everything you need in a romcom from births, deaths and even a bit of Bon Jovi thrown in for good measure :) I am a big Bon Jovi fan so it was guaranteed to be a hit for me from the minute I knew he was in it!  I really enjoyed watching it, my husband wasn’t too enthralled by it but romcom’s aren’t really his thing. I think it’s definitely one for the ladies rather than the men!

Warner Bros Tom and Jerry Trick or Treat and Scooby Doo Big Top DVD Reviews

A rather fabulous parcel arrived on our doorstep from Warner Bros on Halloween, it contained two great dvds, bubbles, sweets and a cat mask. You can always rely on Warner Bros to put a smile on MasterB and MissB’s faces :)

MissB is a little obsessed with Tom and Jerry at the moment, since we started watching old episodes on the Ipad and so when she saw this DVD she was extremely excited. A whopping 22 new Tom and Jerry cartoons to watch :) The DVD hasn’t disappointed and MissB will happily sit for hours watching it, we now have it in the car to put on the DVD player in there on long journeys as it makes it so much more peaceful ;)

“Tom and Jerry are in for spooks galore in this monster collection. With 20 eerie episodes plus two bonus episodes, your goodie-bag will be overflowing with fun! Tricks and treats are at every turn, from ancient Egypt to Transylvania, from creepy houses to haunted forests, the
hair-raising hilarity is non-stop! Our favorite cat and mouse mingle with ghosts, mummies, werewolves and witches in these terrific tales. Of course Tom and Jerry have a bounty of tricks up their own sleeves as well! Fear not, the chase is on! It’s a scare-iffic good time for the whole family!”

The second DVD was Scooby-Doo Big Top

“When Scooby and the gang hear of a werewolf plaguing a traveling circus, they go undercover as circus performers to get to the bottom of the mystery. Things soon go from bad to worse when the number of werewolves starts increasing, and the members of Mystery Inc. realize they might be in danger of turning into these monstrous beasts themselves!”

You can’t beat a bit of Scooby for all round family entertainment, although the monsters do have MissB hiding behind her blanket occasionally :) She does however love Scooby and it’s much better than all these modern cartoons where I don’t know any of the characters, it’s nice to be able to share memories of my childhood with my children :) It’s a lovely DVD which has been played about 20 times since we received it so I guess that means it gets a big thumbs up from our household :)

Both these DVDs can be bought from all the usual places, I have included links to them on Amazon below :)

Rock Of Ages DVD Review

I love the eighties so when Warner Bros. asked if I would like a copy of Rock of Ages to review, I snapped their hands off :)

“Under the direction of Adam Shankman (“Hairspray”), New Line Cinema’s feature film adaptation of the smash hit Broadway musical “Rock of Ages” comes to the big screen.

“Rock of Ages” tells the story of small town girl Sherrie and city boy Drew, who meet on the Sunset Strip while pursuing their Hollywood dreams. Their rock ‘n’ roll romance is told through the heart-pounding hits of Def Leppard, Foreigner, Journey, Poison, REO Speedwagon, Twisted Sister and more.

This is definitely one for anyone with a penchant for 80s rock, not to mention the cast which includes Tom Cruise, Alex Baldwin, Russell Brand, Catherine Zeta Jones and Mary J. Blige.”

I have to admit, it was rather strange seeing Tom Cruise in this kind of role and it took a bit of getting used to but you know what – it works! He is actually really good in it. Russell Brand is absolutely brilliant and Catherine Zeta Jones puts on a great performance too :) The film, as you would probably expect is cheesy and you won’t be able to resist nodding your head, playing air guitar and singing along! I’m not usually a huge fan of musicals but when combined with so many rock classics of the 80′s I ended up really enjoying it, in fact so much I’ve already watched it twice :)

Rock of Ages was released on the 8th October and it can be bought in all the usual places, I’ve included a link to it on Amazon below :)

The Vampire Diaries – The Complete First Season Boxset Review

I don’t mention it much but I’m a bit of a vampire addict, I’ve always loved vampire tales from Dracula through to Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I loved the Twilight books and films but I confess that The Vampire Diaries has passed me by for some reason. Maybe because I’ve been busy having children and not had time to watch any series over the last couple of years :) The lovely people from Warner Bros have very kindly sent me the box set of The Vampire Diaries – The Complete First Season so now I have no excuse not to catch up on what I’ve been missing :)

“It’s Elena’s first day back at Mystic Falls High School since the tragic death of her parents. Along with her Aunt Jenna, Elena tries her best to look after her troubled younger brother, Jeremy, and salvage what family they have left. The first day is already shaping up to be a struggle for Elena until she meets the mysterious new kid at school, Stefan. Elena is touched that he can relate to what she’s going through. What Elena doesn’t know is that Stefan is a vampire, constantly resisting the urge to taste her blood. As their undeniable connection grows deeper, Stefan’s dangerous older brother, Damon, shows up to wreak havoc on the town of Mystic Falls – and claim Elena for himself.”

The box set consists of 5 discs and 22 episodes, unsurprisingly I haven’t been able to watch all of them for this review, in fact I’m only four episodes into the series but already I can feel myself getting a little addicted :) OK so make that hooked, there is something rather addictive about the series  and a little bit of eye candy in the form of Ian Somerhalder who plays Damon (why are the bad guys always so much more attractive?) certainly keeps you going back for more :) I’m hoping by the time I finish the first season, Warner Bros are going to continue my new addiction by sending me seasons and two and three lol.

The box set also includes special features such as:
The Vampire Diaries: The Awakening – Audio Book
The Vampire Diaries: Vampires 101
The Vampire Diaries: A Darker Truth – Webisodes

You can buy the boxset of The Vampire Diaries – The Complete Season One in most places, I’ve included a link to it on Amazon below :)

Scooby Doo’s Spooky Games DVD Review

Just before we left for our holiday the other week, a package arrived just as we were loading the car. It was perfect timing as it contained Scooby-Doo! Spooky Games, sent to us by the lovely people at Warner Bros. I say excellent timing because it was opened and put straight into the DVD player in the car ready for our 3 hour drive. Watching DVDs in the car is the only way we can get any peace a great way of keeping the children entertained :) (I won’t go into how I killed the portable DVD player at Chester Zoo here but needless to say I’m devastated). As a child I remember loving Scooby-Doo and so I think I was more excited about the kids when I introduced them to it :)

Scooby-Doo and the gang are off to compete in the World Invitational Games in this all new 23 minute episode. Who would have thought that Shaggy could be selected as an athlete but it appears all those years of running away from monsters has been excellent training! Of course as in all Scooby adventures, things start going a little spooky when a 1000 year old statue comes to life and threatens to ruin the entire event! Will Scooby and the gang solve the mystery?

The mystery solving technology may have improved (police with taser’s and computers!) since I last saw an episode and the graphics may be a bit better but it’s still the same old Scooby and gang which I love :)

Included on the DVD is Scooby’s All Star Laff-A-Lympics!, here Scooby is joined by some very familiar Hanna-Barbera characters as three teams compete is some rather bizarre events such as bull-fighting (with a difference), leprechaun hunting and roller-skating. It even guest stars Fred Flintstone and Barney Rubble! This was a serious trip down memory lane for me, I think I recognised almost all of the characters such as Dick Dastardly and Yogi Bear.

Scooby-Doo! Spooky Games can be bought in all the usual places, I’ve included a link to it on Amazon below. It’s rated PG and it’s definitely one to introduce to your kids (purely so you can watch it too!).

Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close Review

Warner Bros must have known that I was home alone last weekend as the arrival of a parcel from them on Friday was perfectly timed for a chilled out evening with a tub of ice cream once the children were in bed and the house was quiet :) The parcel contained their new release Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close which I’d been looking forward to watching ever since I’d seen the trailer to it a couple of weeks ago.

“Adapted from the acclaimed bestseller by Jonathan Safran Foer, “Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close” is a story that unfolds from inside the young mind of Oskar Schell, an inventive eleven year-old New Yorker whose discovery of a key in his deceased father’s belongings sets him off on an urgent search across the city for the lock it will open. A year after his father died in the World Trade Center on what Oskar calls “The Worst Day,” he is determined to keep his vital connection to the man who playfully cajoled him into confronting his wildest fears. Now, as Oskar crosses the five New York boroughs in quest of the missing lock – encountering an eclectic assortment of people who are each survivors in their own way – he begins to uncover unseen links to the father he misses, to the mother who seems so far away from him and to the whole noisy, dangerous, discombobulating world around him.”

This is one of those films that you will need to have a box of tissues close at hand for, I cried buckets! It’s absolutely beautiful and really draws you into the story. Sandra Bullock and Tom Hanks are as great as they always are but the real star of the film is Thomas Horn who plays Oskar. Your heart can’t help but go out to a complicated little boy who lost his dad on Sept 11th. As a mother myself, watching the apparent helplessness of Oskar’s mother to help her son was saddening. The relationship between Oskar and “the Renter” is beautiful to watch as it develops, it has you both laughing and crying. Who is this mysterious man and what exactly is his story?

The end of the film, well you’ll have to watch it to see what happens but be warned you really really will need those tissues :) It takes you on a real rollercoaster ride of laughter, love, heartbreak, sorrow, pity and pretty much every emotion that you can squeeze into a film. It gets a big thumbs up from me :)

Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close is available to buy now in all the usual formats and in most places. I’ve included a couple of links to it on Amazon below.

Journey 2 The Mysterious Island Review

I love films of absolutely any kind when I get chance to watch them that is, so when a box from Warner Home Video arrived on my doorstep I was very happy. When I opened it to find a collection of bugs and spiders I nearly had heart failure but it only took me about 5 seconds to realise they were plastic :) Inside the box was a copy of their new release Journey 2 The Mysterious Island, so in order to give you a review, I sat myself down with a G&T, a box of chocolates and put my feet up to watch it last night ;)

“Who’s up for an adventure? Believe everything you read as the action-packed 3D adventure follow-up to Journey to the Centre of the Earth goes to the deadliest and deepest part of the ocean as the box office smash hit JOURNEY 2: THE MYSTERIOUS ISLAND comes to Blu-ray 3D, Blu-ray, DVD and Digital Download on 28 May 2012, from Warner Home Video.”

Directed by Brad Peyton, Journey 2: The Mysterious Island is loosely based on the Jules Verne’s novel The Mysterious Island and stars Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Michael Caine (I love Michael Cain), Josh Hutcherson, Vanessa Hudgens, Luiz Guzman and Kristin Davis. Journey 2: The Mysterious Island follows the adventures of Sean Anderson, (reprising his role from the first film) after he receives a coded distress signal from a mysterious location where no island should exist. It’s a place of giant creatures, mountains of gold, deadly volcanoes and more than one astonishing secret. Unable to stop him from going, Sean’s new stepfather, Hank, joins the quest. Together with a helicopter pilot and his beautiful, strong-willed daughter they set out to find the island, rescue its lone inhabitant and escape before seismic shockwaves force the island under the sea and bury its treasures forever.

Experience the breathtaking beauty of the island and jump into the action to escape a giant eel and soar through the air on giant bees with the stunning high definition Blu-ray 3D release, which puts you at the heart of the thrilling adventure. You’ll believe the impossible and discover the incredible with this exploration of a life-time as the must have family movie JOURNEY 2: THE MYSTERIOUS ISLAND comes to Blu-ray 3D, Blu-ray, DVD and Digital Download on 28 May 2012.

So what did I think of the film? Well I admit I’ve not watched the first film Journey to the Center of The Earth but it didn’t affect my viewing of this film. The scenery is stunning (I so wish I had a 3D TV to watch it on so I could have watched it in 3D – I bet it looks stunning!). I always loved books like Treasure Island and hearing stories of Atlantis when I was a child so this film was right up my street. Michael Cain was as funny as ever in his role as the Grandad (have I mentioned how much I love Michael Cain?) and he had me chuckling all the way through.

The film is rated PG which is fair enough, there is nothing overly scary in it except for the odd giant lizard or spider. The mini elephants were definitely my favourite though, if MissB saw those she would be wanting one as a pet :) I think this would make great family viewing (although my two are a little young for it yet).

You can buy Journey 2: The Mysterious Island in all the usual places, including Amazon of course. I’ve put links to it below :)

Thomas & Friends: Rescue on the Rails DVD

We love a good children’s DVD in this household. They are our saviour for long car journeys and keeping MissB and MasterB entertained. When we were asked if we would like to review the brand new Thomas & Friends DVD, Rescue on the Rails, I of course snapped their hands off :)

20120508-192723.jpg

Rescue on the Rails is due to be released on Monday 21st May with a RRP of £12.99. The DVD features four lovely new episodes Fiery Flynn, James to the Rescue, Edward the Hero and Stop That Bus! It also includes bonus guess who puzzles and a feature on the level crossing. Run time is 54 minutes.

Sodor Search and Rescue Team races to the rescue, Bertie gets stuck on Shake Shake Bridge, Gordon is derailed, and Thomas’ firebox is on fire! In these thrill-a-minute episodes, the enterprising engines brave the rails to rescue their friends and discover that being heroic is more than having speed and strength, it’s about teamwork and a big heart – which puts every “Really Useful Engine” on the right track.

I admit I’ve not watched much of the DVD as it tends to get played in the car so I can only judge it by the laughing and bizarre comments I hear coming from behind me. At first I thought I’d put on a different DVD as MissB kept going on about a penguin (I later realised she was referring to the fat controller!). MasterB was entranced by the entire DVD, he loves his Thomas toy and I think he’s going to become a bit of a Thomas fan as he gets older :) From a parents point of view, this brought back many memories of my childhood for me and it’s lovely to see that Thomas still retains the same charm that he had back then. Time may have moved on but some things still remain the same, children LOVE Thomas :)

Mike The Knight – Knight In Training DVD

MissB loves watching CBeebies before nursery in a morning and she particularly loves Mike The Knight (I think this is because he looks a little like her real Uncle Mike!). We’ve been sent a copy of the first Mike The Knight DVD – Knight In Training which will be released on Monday March 19th

If you’ve not met Mike The Knight yet then you really need to check him out :)

Mike The Knight

Mike is an energetic, cheeky yet bountiful young knight-in-training, driven by his passion to help others and, along the way, be the best knight he can be. With his father, the King away exploring faraway lands Queen Martha has put Mike in charge of helping her protect the Kingdom of Glendragon.

Determined to do his best, through comedy and adventure with his rallying cry ‘Be a knight, do it right’ Mike learns the power of responsibility and how to do things the right way.

With a little help from his Big Book for little Knights in training, the would-be-hero rises to each episode’s mission with the help of his closest friends: Sparkie and Squirt a pair of friendly, quirky dragons, and his trusty steed Galahad. Never far from the action and always willing to help out is Mike’s fun and free-spirited sister Evie, a wizard in training.
