A Pint of Your Finest Please – Or I Want Your Blood!

Yes that’s right people, I want your blood! Well not me exactly but the National Blood Service would :) You may have seen me in the press last week helping to promote National Blood Week, if not you can read my story about how receiving blood saved my life and you will understand why this is an important subject to me. If I hadn’t received blood transfusions when having MasterB then I wouldn’t be here today writing this.

National Blood Service - Do Something Amazing - Give Blood

It now appears I’ve volunteered myself to run the Great North Run (half marathon) for the National Blood Service team but there is a catch! You see I can’t ask for your money, yes that’s right I don’t want your money but I do want something that you have plenty of and it won’t cost you anything to part with :) What I need to do is to get 15 (yes only 15 but I aim to smash this target) new donors to register with the National Blood Service.

Now I know quite a few of you are reading this and thinking – no chance, but lets me serious for a moment. Only 4% of the population (those eligible to give blood) actually do, the rest of us rely on their blood if something goes wrong! And it isn’t just major accidents which mean you might one day need it, I never expected to need blood but it happened, it wasn’t an accident it was just pregnancy and birth. One day it might be you or your children, your partner, your friends that need blood and can you imagine if there was none available? It’s a scary thought isn’t it.

Anyway enough of my preaching, you KNOW it’s a good thing to do and if you’re willing to sign up to sponsor me then that would be fantastic. Let’s see if I can completely smash my target of 15 new donors! I’m sure we can get a much higher number than that.

As for me, well I can’t donate but I am putting myself through a grueling 13.1 miles of running to help raise awareness and get new donors. You can follow my running story and training progress here >> Running It’s going to be tough for me as I haven’t ran properly in over 3.5 years so I need to do a lot of training before then but if I know that people are signing up to enrol as a blood donor to support me then it will help keep me motivated.

So how to you sponsor me?

1. I have a large pile of enrollment forms here with me, I’ll be fetching a few to Britmums Live or if you are going to see me somewhere else anytime soon then I’d love for you to fill one out for me.

2. If you aren’t likely to see me soon then please pop over to the blood services website and you can sign up here >;>; Enrol as a Blood Donor. If you sign up online could I ask you to email me at dawn@kneesupmotherbrown.me letting me know your name, date of birth and postcode please otherwise I won’t be able to include you in my total enrollments figure :)

And so it begins again… My journey back to fitness

I miss running, I haven’t ran since I got pregnant with MissB early in 2009. Before this I’d been running regularly and enjoying it for a couple of years. I’d ran 10k races (never with the hope of winning as I’m not a fast runner) and I’d entered the Great North Run in 2008. Unfortunately on my last training run the week before I went over on my ankle after 11 miles and so I ended up sitting out and waiting for my hubby to finish the race that year. My place was deferred but in 2009 I was pregnant, and in 2010 I was pregnant again. 2011 was a manic year and so I never entered but in 2012 I’m back :)

I’ve been given a GNR place, running for blood (more news to come on this soon) and so the training needs to start again. I’ve dug out my hubby’s garmin forerunner and I’ve got a new pair of running shoes so I’m all set :) My new shoes are vivobarefoot shoes as I’ve been reading a lot about barefoot running recently and I’ve decided if I’m going to give it a go, I might as well restart my training with a new running style. I used to get knee problems before and I’ve read barefoot running could help this so we will see!

I’ll be logging my progress on here, I’m just about to set up a new Running page so I can keep it all in one place :) I’m excited! I miss running, I miss feeling fit and I miss the freedom of just putting on a pair of shoes and running the tracks. 14 weeks to get myself up to half marathon fitness? Can I do it? We shall see :)
