Potty Training We Are Go!
I think my approach to potty training has been a bit like baby led weaning. We’ve been giving MissB the opportunity to use the potty with no pressure since she first started showing an interest in it back when she was around 16-18 months old. We bought a couple of potties, we bought a few books about potty training to read with her and we left it at that. She would happily sit on the potty (usually with her nappy and clothes on) and sing “wee wee wee” and a few months ago we started her wearing pull ups during the day.
We are lucky in that our nursery are very willing to work with us on potty training and MissB has been sitting on the potty and their little toilets for quite a while now. She rarely did anything though, occasionally the odd wee if the timing was right and once bizarrely she actually did a poo in it (again more through pure luck that anything else). Nursery are fab, they have stamps and sticker reward charts and have built up a real excitement about it there.
I did buy lots of pairs of big girl pants a couple of months ago but MissB has been reluctant to wear them home and wanted her pull ups on, as I don’t want to turn potty training into a battle or make it stressful, I just left it figuring that she will want to wear big girl pants when she is ready. Anyway this week MissB has really started to show signs of being ready. Whilst in the bath the other night, she suddenly declared she wanted a wee and asked for the potty, so I lifted her out, she sat on the potty, did a wee, stood up very proud of herself and then got back in the bath She has also shown much more interest in using the toilet at nursery and done a few more wees recently on them.
So this week, I’ve been speaking to her carer at nursery and discussing a plan of action, you see MissB will sit on the potty and do a wee if she needs one quite happily, she understands that this is what she is to do, but whilst wearing pull ups she just isn’t getting the idea that when she needs a wee she needs to go and sit on the potty. We decided that MissB may be more happy to try wearing big girl pants at nursery where her friends are also wearing them and this might be the change she needs to understand that when she wants a wee she should use the potty. So yesterday I left a pile of pants with her carer and wished them luck
Last night I picked up a beaming MissB from nursery who proudly showed me the SIX stamps she had on her arms and her stickers on her reward chart. Apparently she was more than happy to wear big girl pants and had been wearing them all day. She had a couple of accidents (as was completely expected) but the big leap forward was that she now understands that when she wants a wee she needs to use the potty She is very proud of herself and looking forward to wearing big pants again at nursery today.
This morning I dropped her off and she seemed so excited about wearing pants again and the possibility of getting lots of stamps and stickers I think we’ve made a big leap forward and can safely say that we are now in full blown potty training Of course we’ve got the weekend looming and so this afternoon I’m going to be busy making a reward chart and buying stickers etc for her so that we can replicate what nursery do at home. I’m expecting quite a few accidents, especially as we also have MasterB around who is a bit of a distraction but fingers crossed the next few days will all go ok and we can shortly be saying goodbye to nappies for good (well for one of the terrors anyway )
