Generally, I dislike children until they have reached at least the age of ten. I can't see anything nice in babies or small children and I'm certainly not ashamed of that fact and I don't try and hide it. I just think that some of us are more maternal than others. My children are brilliant now that they are 13 and 16. They are both interesting people with whom I'm able to have an intelligent conversation with and they are becoming more and more independent. Babies are boring, noisy, smelly, time consuming and too dependent and toddlers are nearly as bad.

There are so many cover-ups in motherhood and those mothers who have feelings about children that are different to what society expects of them are often afraid to speak the truth. Motherhood doesn't mean sainthood - we are all only human and some of us are likely to take to the role more easily than others. I have cared for and taught my children in the best way that I could, but during the earlier years it was definitely a huge struggle for me at times.

Your honesty is very refreshing. I don't have children yet (newlywed here), and I have many reservations and fears even though I really do want children. So it's good for me to hear other women express some of my concerns. I want children, but the baby thing freaks me out! The sleeplessness, the boredom, the lack of feedback etc. It just doesn't sound that fun, even though I know I'll love having my own child. I would just love to fast forward through that stage. I'm glad I'm not the only who feels that way. Thanks. :)

Don't worry, it seems from the comments there are quite a few of us and that we won't get lynched for admitting it :)

Oh I am exactly the same. I am okay once they can give something back, some interaction or other, but before that it is mostly frustrating and annoying. I too wanted children and not babies! Great post.

I wrote a post, "Ugly Babies", a little while ago and so your post resonated! It also had me wondering if you had met an old boyfriend of mine:

"...too needy, they cry a lot, they never sleep, they don’t give you much back and let’s face it they are pretty boring!"

Spooky.

Thoroughly enjoyed this honest post, so I won't be one of the ones' stoning you. :D HMSx

Haha love you honesty! I so love babies, I love watching them, holding them and talking about them but it is hard work with very little reward for the first few months. Iyla is 11 months at the moment and I love this age, she can say so many words, do tricks, and give cuddle and kisses so it feels like I am getting something back. I am really looking forward to being able to do activities with her and talk to her...but I know I will miss the baby stage when she's not one anymore! X
